Giant Orange Isopods (Porcellio laevis ‘Giant Orange’) are a popular species used as terrarium custodians, or ‘clean-up crew’ in bio-active set-ups.
- Isopods feed on decaying matter including leaves, wood, mold and animal faeces and in turn add nutrients to your terrarium for healthy plant growth and eliminate build up of mold.
- Although not technically a ‘giant’ species adults can reach up to 18mm. They breed relatively rapidly so one starter culture should be enough to give you continous supply over time unless you have quite hungry vivarium inhabitants of course.
- Having a high calcium content due to their calcarious exo-skeleton Giant Orange Woodlice also make excellent live food for reptiles and amphibians.
- To thrive and become established Giant Orange Isopods in the terrarium, Giant Orange Isopds need to be in a constantly damp and humid microclimate which normally means that they hide away for much of the time under branches, rocks or within the substrate.
- For substrate, a classic Tropical New Caledonia Gecko terrarium mix is always a great choice offered in are shop! Something with plenty of coco coir and sphagnum moss for moisture retention and a nice loose texture for burrowing, covered with leaf litter for nutrition and hiding spot opportunities.
